The money missed predicting McCain’s play last week. Romney and Pawlenty were considered his most likely selections. Instead, McCain went with Sarah Palin, the governor of Alaska, who I must have missed on Betfair’s board. I didn’t have her in my previous entry’s top six picks. From what I could find, the payout on Palin as McCain’s selection was around 6-1 or 7-1. McCain went with a bit of a long shot, a real underdog. You might call his move … a gamble.
And plenty of news organizations are appropriately calling it just that. As I mention in Chapter 1 of my book, “The Joy of Bets“, gambling takes many forms. This is yet another example that gambling is all around us in the United States of America. McCain has made a political gamble in the selection of Palin. After her speech last night in St. Paul, it appears that this gamble could give McCain the payout he has long sought, the biggest professional payout in the world, the American presidency.
Barring any future surprises, McCain should commend himself for his bold play. Great gamble, sir.
