I’m a day late with the followup post I promised because the lines were all sorts of wacky until this afternoon.  Things are settling down, and we’re about 60 hours away from our next set of results.

Now that last weekend’s pain has subsided some, and we’ve all had a chance to live with the results, I wanted to recap.  Believe it or not, this has been a good year so far.  Starting with a bankroll of 1000, the UT has already produced an additional 700 (CLE 200, KCX 200, MIA 100, MIN 100, STL 100).  If we weren’t currently running up such debts with so many teams the UT’s production would be more visible.  But that’s how things go.  Great reward requires great risk.  Once teams start to turn it around (they will), and things return to normal (they always do), we can expect at least another 500 (STL, IND, NOX, TBX, TEN) added to that 700.

As I was typing I got a sense of deja vu.  I get that a lot with the UT, but this was deja vu specific to the content of this post.  I remembered that around this time last year (turns out it was the same day!) I was typing a similar pep a talk.  You can find it here.  Pointing this out is not intended to suggest that we’re all set this weekend, this season is definitely more challenging than last, but then again, ‘right now’ always seems scarier than ‘back then’.  We’ll get through it eventually.  Bets of luck to all.

Watching the first 10 minutes of the first two games, the last 10 minutes of the last game, then checking the bankroll after the games, made me feel like McCroskey.

If you’re a UT newbie who thinks he’s feeling some pain, well, you’re not imagining things, this has turned pretty painful.  I’ll share an article about this bizarre season (I love Mr. Youmans’ choice of adjective), and be back tomorrow to explain that things really are better than they seem, they just feel bad now.  You’ll see.  See you tomorrow.

MATT YOUMANS: Rancid teams prove to be bookmakers’ nightmare

…”I can’t remember an NFL season with this many bad teams,” said Las Vegas Hilton sports book director Jay Kornegay, who has been in the business for 22 years. “No doubt, it was the worst day ever for the books.

”We can’t attract money on these poor teams. We keep losing on the same teams. They are not even close to covering.”

… The Patriots were 151/2-point favorites in a 35-7 victory over Tampa Bay at London. The Colts were 14-point road favorites in a 42-6 victory over St. Louis. The Packers, 9-point road favorites, put a 31-3 beating on Cleveland.

…  ”When you give a team 14 points at home or 15 points at a neutral site, you think you’re doing the right thing,” Kornegay said. ”In the past, you would hardly ever see a team getting 14 points at home. But some of these teams are so terrible, you might see it on a weekly basis. It creates a bad situation for the sports books when the bad teams don’t cover, because liability adds up real fast.

…  The bookmakers and oddsmakers need to ”aggressively adjust” the numbers, Kornegay said, so we might soon be seeing 17- or 20-point favorites in the NFL.

… “I can guarantee every book on the planet needs the Dolphins to either win or cover against the Saints. But that’s just preventing a nightmare,” Kornegay said, as the Saints stormed back and the books’ nightmare worsened.

Not just a big deal that the head of the Bank of England is calling for the break up of big banks in the U.K., it’s noteworthy how honest he is in describing what most of them have become.

“The second option might involve preventing banks from combining risky ‘casino’ activities with the basic, utility-type services that they offer, such as providing customers with bank accounts and lending to households and companies. Financial institutions that carry out the risky business could then be allowed to fail without that having an impact on the services crucial to the operation of the economy. This too, has its challenges. For example, history has shown that governments, in the midst of a crisis, have not found it easy to stand behind only the basic services provided to the wider economy if that leaves a risk that the crisis might spread.  Whatever the path we choose, we must move away from the world where banks can take gambles, safe in the knowledge that they will be guaranteed by the government.”
